What to Wear for a Photoshoot in the Smoky Mountains: Seasonal Style Tips
Keywords: what to wear for a photoshoot, Smoky Mountains family photos, fall photography outfits Smoky Mountains
Introduction
One of the most common questions I get as a Smoky Mountains photographer is, “What should we wear for our session?” Choosing the right outfits makes a huge difference in how your photos turn out—it helps set the mood, makes your images pop, and keeps the whole group looking put-together without being too matchy. This guide breaks down what to wear for each season in the Smokies so you look and feel your best.
Before we dive in, I do want to note that neutrals ALWAYS look best! Light neutral colors really work well with my photography style and definitely affect the aesthetic of the entire photo. With that being said, it never hurts to throw in a tiny pop of color!
Spring Style Tips 🌸
March – May
The mountains are blooming with wildflowers and greenery, so soft colors work beautifully.
Recommended colors: blush, cream, light blue, sage green
Outfit ideas: Flowy dresses, light sweaters, khakis, and linen shirts
Pro tip: Bring a light jacket—it can still get chilly, especially in the mornings!
Summer Style Tips ☀️
June – August
With lush forests and golden sunlight, summer sessions have a dreamy, vibrant feel.
Recommended colors: ivory, soft yellow, dusty rose, teal
Outfit ideas: Maxi dresses, shorts with tucked-in tops, casual button-ups
Pro tip: Choose breathable fabrics—you might be walking to some of our photo spots!
Fall Style Tips 🍁
September – November
Fall in the Smokies is legendary. The trees explode in reds, oranges, and golds, so your outfits should complement—not compete with—the colors.
Recommended colors: burnt orange, navy, forest green, mustard, maroon
Outfit ideas: Sweaters, boots, scarves, layers!
Pro tip: Coordinated (not identical) family outfits photograph best. Try using a color palette and mixing it across different outfits.
Winter Style Tips ❄️
December – February
Winter brings peaceful, muted backdrops and the occasional snowy session. Think cozy and timeless.
Recommended colors: burgundy, dark green, cream, charcoal
Outfit ideas: Wool coats, beanies, flannel shirts, cozy knits
Pro tip: If snow’s in the forecast, I can help you prep for a magical winter wonderland shoot!
General Styling Tips 📸
Avoid neon colors and bold logos—they distract from your faces and the scenery
Dress for the location—if we’re hiking, wear shoes you can walk in
Bring backup layers—weather in the Smokies can shift quickly
Coordinate, don’t match—stick with 2-3 colors across the group
